Grade 4: Time Signatures: Introduction
The following time signatures have been studied in grades 1 to 3.
Simple time 3/8 2/4 3/4 4/4 2/2 3/2 & 4/2
Compound time 6/8 9/8 & 12/8
In grade 4 you will also need to know the following time signatures.
Simple time 4/8
Compound time 6/4 9/4 12/4 6/16 9/16 & 12/16
There is no difference in the notation of 2/4 and 4/8, the rhythm below could have a time signature or either 4/8 or 2/4. However the time signature will affect the way the musical passage is performed.
4/8 means four beats in a bar and 2/4 means two beats in a bar. In 4/8 you would write the beats as quavers but in 2/4 you write the beats in crotchets.
