Grade 4: Technical names: Introduction

In grade 4 you will need to know the technical names of the notes in the major and minor scales. The technical names relate to the degree of the scale i.e. if G is the key note the ‘tonic’ will be ‘G’ and the mediant will be ‘B’. If D is the key note the ‘tonic’ would be ‘D’ and the mediant would be ‘F#’.
