Grade 4: Grouping of notes: Introduction

In this exercise you may be asked to rewrite music placing the notes in the correct grouping for the given time signature.  Always check the time signature first and then group the notes accordingly.  A typical question is shown below:

Example question: Rewrite this melody with the notes correctly grouped (beamed).

Answer:

The time signature of 9/16 contains three dotted quaver beats in a bar (equivalent to nine semiquavers per bar).  The notes have now been grouped correctly.  Notice that the rests have also been altered to their correct value.
